At the opening ceremony of the new wind tunnel building at the University of Oldenburg on January 26, 2017, Prof. Dr. Joachim Peinke, University of Oldenburg, and Elke Seidel, EAWE Branch Manager, met Dr. Gabriele Heinen-Kljajić, Minister for Science and Culture of Lower Saxony, Germany, and presented to her the published Long-term Research Agenda of the EAWE. The Ministry for Science and Culture financially supports the EAWE head office. Both editors of the agenda, Prof. Dr. Ir. em. Gijs van Kuik, Technical University of Delft, and Prof. Dr. Joachim Peinke also met with Dr. Ir. Matthijs Soede, Research Programme Officer, DG Research & Innovation, European Commission, to discuss challenges in wind energy research.

Since January 2017 Dr.-Ing. David Schlipf, University of Stuttgart, is the new treasurer of EAWE taking over for Prof. Dr. Joachim Peinke, University of Oldenburg, who supported EAWE as treasurer for several years. EAWE welcomes David Schlipf and expresses its gratitude to Joachim Peinke for his commitment.

At the Science of Making Torque 2016 in Munich the following awards were presented by Prof. Sandrine Aubrun (EAWE president) and Prof. Carlo Bottasso (EAWE Vice-President and conference host): During the Historical Evening in the famous old hangar of the Flugwerft Schleißheim Prof. Dr. Gijs van Kuik (TU Delft) and Prof. Dr. Peter Tavner (Durham University) received the EAWE Honorary Membership for their excellent work, extraordinary efforts and outstanding contributions for the development of the Academy. At the Bavarian Banquet at the Historical Hofbräuhaus München Dr. Paul Veers from NREL, US, was honored with the EAWE Scientific Award for his extraordinary achievements and continued leadership in wind energy research, and his impact on the scientific literature as Chief Editor for the journal “Wind Energy”. The EAWE Excellent Young Wind Doctor Award was presented to Dr. David Schlipf for his PhD Thesis “Lidar-Assisted Control Concepts for Wind Turbines”. The voted for TORQUE 2016 Best Poster Awards were presented to Janik Kiefer, Princeton University, United States, Mahdi Ghane from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway, and René Bos from Delft University of Technology, Netherlands. The sixth EAWE conference Science of Making Torque from Wind , 5-7 October 2016 (TORQUE 2016) took place at the Technische Universität München, Campus Garching, Germany. Organized by Prof. Dr. Carlo Bottasso it had been the largest Torque conference, yet. Over 530 attendees participated in a high-level technical and scientific program including ten sessions, featuring 142 oral presentations and 167 posters. Integrated in the successful event was the plenary Roundtable “The Future Needs of Wind Energy Scientific Research”, moderated by Prof. G. van Kuik (www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmvaICNk4wA). Next to the technical program also the social program offered impressive surroundings like the Historical Evening in the famous old hangar of the Flugwerft Schleißheim and the conference Dinner at the Bavarian Banquet at the Historical Hofbräuhaus München, where also the Award Ceremonies took place. The 13th EAWE PhD Seminar will take place at Cranfield University, United Kingdom from 20 to 22 September 2017. The seminar will be organized by Dr. Athanasios Kolios.

At the WindEurope Conference 2016 in Hamburg, 27 – 29 September, EAWE was present with a small stand at the Congress Center (CCH).

Due to the current security situation in Turkey the EAWE presidency decided in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Oğuz Ozul that the EAWE PhD Seminar 2016 will take place in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark and not in Ankara, Turkey.
The 12th EAWE PhD seminar will be organized by Prof. Dr. Jakob Mann together with Prof. Dr. Oğuz Ozul and his team on May 25 – 27, 2016 on the campus of the DTU in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark.

EAWE worked out a long-term research agenda available for free download, hoping it will spur an intensive discussion worldwide within the wind energy community. Readers are encouraged to agree or disagree, propose modifications and missing topics, and to challenge each other with good arguments within the discussion forum.

EAWE started the new open-access, journal Wind Energy Science. Papers undergo an interactive public peer review in a two-stage reviewing process. At the EWEA Annual Event 2015 in Paris EAWE was present with a booth, used as a lively meeting point by members and visitors. During the event eawe president Sandrine Aubrun could briefly encounter Marie Christine Marghem, Minister of Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development, Federal Government of Belgium. To strengthen the contact EAWE also took the opportunity to meet with representatives of the European Commission`s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation. An important event during the conference, which attracted a lot of visitors, was the Poster Award Ceremony for which EAWE provided the Committee. The students of the European Wind Energy Master programme EWEM were frequent visitors and supported the eawe booth.

EAWE launches its own open-access scientific journal ‘Wind Energy Science’. During the launching period, EAWE waives the fees for the first 30 to 40 papers. At the EWEA Paris 2015-conference on wind energy, the new journal was introduced to the European Commission Vice-President for the Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič, who was delighted to learn that Wind Energy Science provides free access to the latest research for everyone.

The 11th EAWE PhD Seminar on Wind Energy in Europe was successfully organized by the University of Stuttgart on its campus in Stuttgart, Germany, from September 23rd to 25th 2015. With its yearly PhD seminar, the European Academy of Wind Energy (EAWE) provides an opportunity for scientific exchange for PhD students and their supervisors all across Europe and gives them a possibility to meet new people and create and extend their networks.

During the PhD seminar the Scientific Award 2015 was presented to Prof. Dr. Jens Nørkær Sørensen, Technical University of Denmark – DTU, for his outstanding contributions to the development of wind energy. The Excellent Young Wind Doctor Award 2015 also went to Denmark, it was presented to Dr. Emmanuel Simon Pierre Branlard, Technical University of Denmark – DTU, for his outstanding thesis "Analysis of wind turbine aerodynamics and aeroelasticity using vortex-based methods“.

On September 22, 2015 a new eawe board was elected: the eawe welcomes Prof. Dr. Sandrine Aubrun, Université d`Orléans, France as the new president of eawe and Prof. Dr. Carlo L. Bottasso as the vice president.

The sixth edition of the conference “The Science of Making Torque from Wind” (TORQUE 2016) will take place October 5-7, 2016 at Technische Universität München (TUM), Campus Garching, Garching bei München, Germany. The conference aims at providing a forum for discussion and technical exchanges on the most recent advances in the general field of wind energy science and technology. On his tour to the Cross-border Energy Region Northern Netherlands/Lower Saxony Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-president for Energy Union of the European Commission, came to Oldenburg, Germany, to visit ForWind/University of Oldenburg with a focus on the building site of the turbulent wind channel and took the chance to stay in contact with eawe. The visit was accompanied by Stefan Wenzel, Minister for Environment, Energy and Climate Protection of Lower Saxony, the Regional Ministers for Energy & Environment Nienke Homan (Province of Groningen) and Tjisse Stelpstra (Province of Drenthe), Dr. Werner Brinker, CEO of EWE AG and a delegation of representatives from economy and administration.

At the DEWEK conference in Bremen eawe was shortly present at the booth of the research cluster WindForS organised by the eawe members University of Stuttgart and University of Munich. During that short period eawe could inter alia welcome Stefan Wenzel, the Minister for the Environment of Lower Saxony and Dr. Georg Menzen, Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, Germany as well as other guests from the wind power industry.

The President of the EAWE Prof. Dr. Jakob Mann and Branch Manager Elke Seidel met with Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-president for Energy Union of the European Commission, at the Hannover Messe, the world's biggest industrial fair, to present EAWE and discuss Wind Energy Research and Education.

As guest at the ForWind stand EAWE was present at the Hannover Messe, the world's biggest industrial fair, and was visited inter alia by an international group of EWEM students (European Wind Energy Master) as well as by Reinhard Bütikofer, Member of the European Parliament (The Greens/EFA), who informed himself about EAWE.

At EWEA Offshore 2015 EAWE participated with a booth, used as a meeting point by members and visitors – inter alia eawe welcomed Olaf Lies, Minister for Economics, Labour and Transport of Lower Saxony, Germany and Prof. Dr. Jim Manwell, University of Massachusetts and NAWEA – North American Wind Energy Academy.

The proceedings of "The Science of Making Torque from Wind 2014 (TORQUE 2014) are listed at the top of the collection of most downloaded Conference Series in 2014 in the IOP showcase for IOPs 10th anniversary in 2015.

The 10th EAWE PhD Seminar on Wind Energy in Europe was successfully held in Orléans, France on October 28-31. More than 100 participants discussed and presented their research topics in talks and posters. For the first time a scientific committee of PhD students and Post-Docs was installed to review the programme.

During the PhD seminar the Excellent Young Wind Doctor Award 2014 was presented to Dr. Ke Ma, Aalborg University, for his outstanding thesis "Power Electronics for the Next Generation Wind Turbine System“.

Swiss participation in Horizon 2020

The Scientific Award of the European Academy of Wind Energy 2014 was presented to Dr. Ervin Bossanyi (left) for his outstanding contributions to the development of wind energy. Dr. Bossanyi held an inspiring acceptance speech during the conference dinner. The honorific speech was held by Prof. Dr. Jakob Mann (right), vice president of the eawe and host of the conference.

The Science of Making Torque from Wind 2014 was held in Lyngby/Copenhagen Denmark on June 18th to 20th, 2014 . 322 persons from 25 countries attended the conference, 187 paper were published and presented either by talk or posters. The poster awards were presented to René Bos (TU Delft), Charles Plumley (University of Strathclyde), Pascal Weihing (University of Stuttgart) and Ali Emre Yilmaz (KU Leuven). Successful first EWEM Summer School in Delft: Next to lectures by several guest lecturers, students and guests participated in a small networking fair, a vivid debate about wind energy costs and an exciting workshop which resulted in building a working wind turbine. On the last day of the Summer School, EWEM went offshore for a close-up of the Windpark Egmond aan Zee.

The second meeting on the eawe long-term research strategy took place in Delmenhorst on March 26th-28th, 2014. Ten key topics were identified, lively discussed and further prepared by the authors in charge.

At the eawe board meeting on March 10th, 2014 at EWEA 2014 in Barcelona the eawe board agreed on the new logo. Following the new logo the eawe website will also be renewed.

The idea to have a booth as a harbour on the spot for eawe members to meet, rest, work and network turned out to be a success. As the new logo was agreed on at the same conference it was the last appearance of eawe with the former logo.
